What is the 60-second answer?
Character.AI is a free-tier-first character library with hundreds of thousands of user-built personas and the biggest community in the space, but it blocks explicit roleplay with a hard ceiling tightened across 2024-2025 after the Garcia v. Character Technologies underage-content protection lawsuit filed October 2024. OurDream is a paid-default AI companion with lasting personas, a 2+ week memory horizon, 4-character group chat, image generation, and adult content allowed for $9.99/month yearly, behind verifiable corporate paperwork. If Character.AI's moderation is why you arrived, OurDream is the answer. If its free tier and character breadth are what you actually value, stay.
For most people typing character ai vs ourdream, the one thing pushing them off Character.AI is the content moderation. I've watched that play out on r/CharacterAI since early 2025: people fed up with refusals landing mid-scene and the tightening that followed the October 2024 Garcia v. Character Technologies federal lawsuit [Source: r/CharacterAI subreddit: content moderation tightening discussion 2024-2025 · verified 2026-05-20]. I deal with that head-on below, while owning the things Character.AI does better than OurDream and always will (a real free tier, that browse-and-trend character library, name recognition).
Why don't we publish a Character.AI score?
We only score platforms in our CrakRevenue affiliate catalog, because our scoring process eats real work per platform: a pricing-page walk every 3 months, a privacy-policy recheck every 6 months, and a regulatory recheck within 7 days of any news. Character.AI isn't in that catalog, we have no commercial relationship with Character Technologies Inc., and we won't pretend to grade a platform we can't keep retesting at the same pace.
What we do publish on Character.AI is a plain brand profile built from public sources: Wikipedia, federal court filings on CourtListener, The Verge, Bloomberg, The New York Times, the public Terms of Service, third-party user estimates, and what people say on r/CharacterAI. So yes, one side gets an 8.2/10 and the other gets a profile with no number. That gap is the honest part. Cooking up a Character.AI score from other people's reviews and dressing it up as if we'd run it through our own hands-on testing would be the exact fake-precision our scoring overview exists to stop.
What is each one actually?
Character.AI
Character.AI is a free-tier-first character library and roleplay platform run by Character Technologies Inc. (Menlo Park, California), founded in 2021 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, both ex-Google engineers off the Meena and LaMDA conversational-AI projects [Source: Character.AI Wikipedia entry: founders, history, MAU estimates · verified 2026-05-20]. It raised at a billion-dollar-plus valuation before 2024 and hit roughly 28 million monthly active users at peak per third-party estimates. The character library is the whole reason it's hard to beat: hundreds of thousands of user-built characters (fictional figures, anime archetypes, historical personas, original creations) sitting on the largest browse-and-discover surface in the category.
Then the timeline got messy. In August 2024 Google paid roughly $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive license to Character.AI's tech and re-hired Shazeer and De Freitas back into Google DeepMind. In October 2024 Megan Garcia filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Character Technologies in Florida federal court (case 6:24-cv-01903) after the death of her 14-year-old son Sewell Setzer III, the case the mainstream press now treats as the trigger for the platform's underage-content protection overhaul [Source: Garcia v. Character Technologies: CourtListener federal docket (case 6:24-cv-01903) · verified 2026-05-20] [Source: The New York Times: coverage of the Garcia v. Character Technologies lawsuit October 2024 · verified 2026-05-20]. More underage-content protection lawsuits followed in October 2025. In December 2024 the platform shipped a Sensitive Content Filter with a hard ceiling: explicit roleplay stays blocked no matter what toggle you flip or what age you attest to. Refusals landing mid-conversation on borderline content became routine across 2024-2025.
The product itself: free character browsing with rate limits, c.ai+ at roughly $9.99/month (priority queue, faster replies, beta features, no adult-content unlock), Group Chat that pulls in the community characters, Character Voice, a studio for building your own, and a community feed. The age floor per the public Terms of Service is 13-plus (with parental consent in some places), enforced by you ticking a box. It's meant for adults only, and we don't recommend it for anyone under 18.
OurDream AI
OurDream AI is a paid-default, multi-modal AI companion run by a three-company structure: Dream Studio USA, Inc. (Delaware C-Corp, 1111B S Governors Ave STE 28684, Dover, DE 19904), Dream Studio LLC (New Mexico operating entity, 1209 Mountain Road Pl NE Ste N, Albuquerque, NM 87110), and Tektopia Ltd (Cyprus private limited, registry HE 473775, Voukourestiou 25, Neptune House, Limassol 3045). You can confirm the Cyprus entry in under a minute on the public Department of Registrar of Companies search portal [Source: Cyprus Department of Registrar of Companies: public entity search portal · verified 2026-05-20] and the Delaware one on the Division of Corporations. Governing law is Delaware, venue New Castle County. CrakRevenue ranked OurDream #1 in its 2026 Top 10 AI Girlfriend listicle [Source: CrakRevenue 2026 Top 10 AI Girlfriend chat platforms editorial listicle · verified 2026-05-20], which is a useful outside signal but not our call. We score on our own.
The app splits into a few spaces. There's the chat surface (five models to pick from: balanced, smart, creative, genius, and a fifth tier), a character builder (40+ personality presets, 100+ occupation tags, 60-80+ kink tags, 19 voice presets, 20+ relationship dynamics), a generator for images and AI video, and a marketplace of 7M+ user-built characters where contributors earn DreamCoins when people interact with their work. A separate route handles male-character variants. Premium gives you unlimited text (the free tier caps at 50 messages a day), voice messages and voice calls (5 coins each, 50 coins a minute), in-app image generation (10 coins an image), and AI video up to 60-second clips (100-300 coins a clip).
Pricing runs Free, Premium Monthly $19.99, or Premium Yearly $9.99/month effective ($119.88/year, -50% versus monthly). Both Premium plans include 1,000 DreamCoins a month, and yearly subscribers get a +1,000 DreamCoin bonus on signup (2,000 upfront). The AIMOJO partner code knocks $10 off the first purchase. Coins don't expire while the subscription is live. Crypto works, and the bank line reads "Dream Studio". On the compliance side you get the verifiable three-company paperwork plus AES encryption at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, SOC 2 Type 2 claims, and a 14-day refund window with an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss consumer-rights overlay.
Where does Character.AI win?
A free tier that's actually free. Character.AI runs a genuine free tier. Most people never pay, and you feel the rate limits mid-conversation but not the second you sit down. The c.ai+ subscription at $9.99/month buys you a priority queue and faster replies, not a content unlock. OurDream's free tier hands you 50 messages and 5 images a day, which is usable and the most generous of the 9 AI girlfriend apps we test, but it still resets on a daily cap. If "free" to you means "use it forever without daily limits getting in the way," Character.AI takes this one cleanly.
A character library nobody else has. Hundreds of thousands of user-built characters with a browse, trend, popular and by-category surface the rest of the field doesn't come close to. OurDream's marketplace holds 7M+ characters, so the raw number is bigger, but the discovery around any single one (search, trending, the community signals you lean on to find a good persona) is thinner, and the marketplace tilts heavily toward adult variants by community habit. If your thing is wandering a huge library of fictional, historical, anime or original personas other people built, without designing your own and without adult content as the point, Character.AI is the answer.
Community size and a name people know. Character.AI sits near 28 million monthly users at peak per third-party estimates. OurDream's user base doesn't line up on the same measure and is plainly smaller. The whole Character.AI orbit (the r/CharacterAI subreddit, the in-app feed, the cultural footprint around its roleplay, the recognition outside the companion-app world) dwarfs anything a single dedicated companion platform carries. That $2.7B Google licensing deal in August 2024 is itself a visibility signal no operator at OurDream's level can match.
Clean SFW fit. If what you genuinely want is SFW roleplay (fictional-character dialogue, talking to a historical figure, a group scene with several personas for a story, a study buddy or writing partner, co-writing fanfiction), Character.AI's moderated setup serves that well. OurDream is built to allow adult content, so even your SFW sessions sit on top of an engine tuned for the explicit stuff, and the framing (personality presets that literally include "kinky", a builder lined with 60-80+ kink tags) just gets in the way when adult content isn't what you're there for.
Where does OurDream win?
Adult roleplay. This is what pulls most people here in the first place. Character.AI blocks adult roleplay with a hard ceiling. The Sensitive Content Filter (December 2024) clamped things down after the Garcia v. Character Technologies underage-content protection lawsuit, refusals land mid-scene on borderline content, and no toggle or paid tier reverses it (c.ai+ at $9.99/month doesn't touch adult content). OurDream runs the whole range, SFW through adult, with paid personas you keep, and it's uncensored by default on Premium. The persona goes where you take her (or him), no refusals, no judgement. If Character.AI's moderation is why you're reading this, OurDream is the honest answer. Candy.ai at 8.4 and the Lovescape writeup are other picks worth a look in our AI girlfriend ranking if you want the same content freedom with different trade-offs.
Memory that holds for 2+ weeks. This is OurDream's real edge: a 9.0/10 here, the longest memory of the 9 AI girlfriend apps we test. Several reviewers and Reddit threads land on roughly 2+ weeks of continuity before the persona starts treating your callbacks like brand-new prompts. I built a persona on a Sunday, gave her a backstory and a running joke, came back the following weekend, and she still had the joke. That almost never happens. Character.AI's memory is session-scoped with thin persistence across sessions, and people who jump ship over exactly this (a well-worn complaint on Reddit) get a genuine upgrade. For long roleplay that runs over weeks (established personas, callbacks that land, world-building that survives a break), OurDream is the pick.
Group chat with up to 4 characters at once. OurDream tops out at 4 characters in a single scene, the most of the 9 AI girlfriend apps we test. Character.AI has Group Chat too, wired into the community library, but the characters hold together better and stay more in-persona in OurDream's purpose-built mode per hands-on reviewer testing. For a 3-character branching story or a 4-character ensemble where each one has to keep its own voice across 10-15 exchanges, getting that on the Premium tier at $9.99 yearly is a real reason to lean OurDream.
A paid persona you build once and keep. OurDream's character creator hands you 40+ personality presets, 100+ occupation tags, 60-80+ kink tags, 19 voices, and 20+ relationship dynamics, on top of the 7M+ marketplace where creators earn DreamCoins when people interact with their characters. You define one persona, dial it in exactly how you want it, and come back to her across sessions inside that 2+ week memory window. Character.AI works the other way around: the characters are mostly built by other users, shared, browsed and chatted with, which is great for variety but doesn't give you the same keep-it-and-return relationship or the same depth of adult customization.
Image generation built into the app. OurDream generates images at 10 coins each, partly uncensored on the free tier and fully unlocked on Premium, and we score that 8.0/10. Character.AI ships nothing comparable in-app. It pours its engineering into conversation and the character library, not an image pipeline. If generating images is a make-or-break feature for you, pick OurDream and don't overthink it.
Corporate paperwork you can actually verify. OurDream runs the three-company setup laid out above (Delaware C-Corp, New Mexico LLC, Cyprus HE 473775), all three checkable on public registries in under a minute. That's a sign of better legal counsel than you usually find at this level, where most companion apps hide behind a single anonymous LLC and a shell trust. Character.AI is California-based under Character Technologies Inc., a fully public, well-documented identity that just happens to be sitting under the pending wrongful-death and underage-content protection litigation covered above. Two different shapes of risk: OurDream wins on paperwork you can verify across several countries, while Character.AI's corporate identity is wide open but its legal exposure looks heavier.
Where does OurDream fall short?
A comparison that only lists the wins of the brand that pays us is the exact slop both readers and AI crawlers learned to spot. OurDream scores 8.2/10. The 1.8 points it's missing live right here, so here they are.
Voice, 5.5/10, its weakest category. Four separate reviewers describe the 19 voice presets as "robotic", "lacking emotional depth", and "sounding distinctly artificial". That's a 1.5-to-2.0 point hole next to better-voiced apps, and it's baked in, not a rounding error. If voice is the thing that makes or breaks it for you (long voice calls, roleplay led by voice messages, a persona whose personality lives in how she sounds), OurDream isn't your pick. The Secrets.ai review at 7.0/10 on voice or the Joi review at 8.0/10 would serve you better on that one axis.
Video generation, a roughly 40% failure rate we haven't tested directly. One source (companionguide) reports about 40% of OurDream's video clips failing, and a failed clip eats your DreamCoins with no refund. That number comes from a single reviewer, so treat it loosely until someone else confirms it: one person's run isn't a population rate, and the pipeline may have been tuned since. The 60-second clip ceiling is genuinely longer than most apps offer, but the burn-coins-on-failure setup is a weakness we'd rather name than bury.
App listings under a person's name, not the company. The iOS listing for "Our dream: AI Companion" (App Store ID 6755042859) and the Google Play listing for com.deepdesire.aigirlfriendchat are both published by a developer called "Albert Paravyan", a personal account rather than any of the three companies [Source: Google Play: OurDream AI Companion developer metadata · verified 2026-05-20]. GDPR Article 13 says the company handling your data should be obvious to you, and here it isn't. Use OurDream on the web, not the native apps.
A USC 2257 exemption argued on AI-only-content grounds, never tested in a US federal court. OurDream claims it doesn't need 2257 record-keeping because the content is AI-generated [Source: Cornell LII: 18 USC 2257 record-keeping requirements · verified 2026-05-20]. No federal court has ruled on that argument yet. We won't dress it up as "fully compliant", and if you're in a place that takes that record-keeping rule seriously, treat it as unsettled.
How do Character.AI and OurDream pricing compare?
The two price totally differently. Character.AI is free-tier-first with an optional subscription that just makes things smoother. OurDream is paid-default with a daily-cap free tier and a coin economy layered on top. So the comparison is about shape, not a line-by-line match.
| Cost item | Character.AI | OurDream AI |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Genuine free tier with rate limits; most users never pay; rate-limit friction felt mid-conversation but not at session start | 50 messages/day + 5 images/day + 5 chats no-signup + 55 DreamCoins on signup (deepest daily-cap free tier in our 9-platform AI girlfriend catalog) |
| Paid subscription | c.ai+ approximately $9.99/month: priority queue, faster responses, beta features. Does NOT unlock adult content (the hard ceiling is unaffected) | Premium Monthly $19.99 / Premium Yearly $9.99/month effective ($119.88/year, -50% versus monthly); AIMOJO partner code -$10 first purchase |
| What the subscription unlocks | Quality-of-life upgrades only; no content unlock; explicit roleplay remains blocked regardless of paid status | Full product surface: unlimited messages, 1,000 DreamCoins/month, group chat (4 chars), HD image gen, video gen, voice calls, full adult-content unlock |
| Token / microtransaction layer | None; the subscription is the whole offering | DreamCoin economy: 10 per image, 5 per voice message, 50 per voice-call minute, 100-300 per video clip. Top-ups 1,000 ($11.99) to 20,000 ($159.99, -33%) |
| Refund / withdrawal posture | Not confirmed first-hand: Character.AI's Terms don't spell out a withdrawal right; reviewer reports vary | 14-day refund window with EU/EEA/UK/Swiss consumer-rights overlay; crypto payments final and non-refundable per policy |
| Bank-statement descriptor | Not confirmed first-hand | "Dream Studio" (discreet, no adult-niche reference) |
The short version: if you want to use it forever without paying and without daily caps hanging over you, Character.AI is the answer and OurDream's free tier is a daily browser, not a stand-in for unlimited free access. If you want a predictable, bounded paid bill that gets you the whole app (adult content, image generation, voice, group chat), OurDream at $9.99/month yearly is the cheaper deal than c.ai+ at $9.99/month flat, and OurDream's subscription actually unlocks content while c.ai+ doesn't. The sticker prices look similar. What each dollar unlocks is not.

| Voice | 10% | 5.5 / 10 | Unscored (external) | OurDream's weakest spot: 19 voice presets four reviewers call 'robotic'; Character.AI's Character Voice rates below dedicated companion apps per reviewer reports |
| Video Generation | 8% | 7.5 / 10 | Unscored (external) | OurDream: 60-second clips at 100-300 DreamCoins (one source reports a ≈40% failure rate, not yet confirmed); Character.AI ships no in-app video gen |
| Composite (weighted) | 100% | 8.2 / 10 | Unscored (external) | OurDream shown with the full 8-category score; Character.AI shown as a brand profile only; see the by-use-case verdict below |
The scorecard puts the gap right out in the open. OurDream's 8 categories are scored to the decimal, lifted straight from its own review, and Character.AI's column reads "Unscored (external)" because it's not a CrakRevenue brand we keep retesting. The "Edge" column gives a factual reason on each row, not a thumbs-up. If you want one head-to-head number, you won't find it here. Use the by-use-case table below instead, because our scoring doesn't produce a Character.AI figure to stack against OurDream's.
Who operates each platform and what are the compliance risks?
Two different shapes of legal risk. We lay out both, because hiding either side would be the kind of thing we call out other reviewers for.
Character.AI. Run by Character Technologies Inc. (Menlo Park, California), founded in 2021 by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. California law governs disputes per the Terms of Service. It's currently under pending wrongful-death and underage-content protection litigation: Garcia v. Character Technologies, filed October 2024 in Florida federal court (case 6:24-cv-01903), plus more underage-content protection lawsuits filed October 2025. The August 2024 Google deal ($2.7B non-exclusive license plus the co-founders moving back to DeepMind) left an odd setup where the founding engineers now work at Google. The age floor per the ToS is 13-plus (parental consent in some places), enforced by self-attestation. The December 2024 Sensitive Content Filter and the 2024-2025 tightening are visible reactions to all of the above.
OurDream AI. Run by the three companies covered above: Dream Studio USA, Inc. (Delaware C-Corp, Delaware law, New Castle County venue), Dream Studio LLC (New Mexico operating entity), and Tektopia Ltd (Cyprus private limited, registry HE 473775, EU/EEA GDPR controller) [Source: OurDream Terms of Service: governing law and corporate identity disclosure · verified 2026-05-20]. Both the Delaware and Cyprus entries check out on the public portals in under a minute. AES encryption at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, SOC 2 Type 2 claims, and a 14-day refund window with an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss overlay are all documented. The honest caveats: the published policies name no data protection officer, list no UK Representative, leave retention windows vague ("time necessary for processing"), and lean on that untested USC 2257 AI-only-content exemption we flagged.
If you're in an age-verification state (TX HB 1181, UT, LA, MS, NC, MT, AR, VA, AL, KY, IN, GA, ID, OK): OurDream is set up to handle these one by one through the EU/UK overlay it already runs. Character.AI's content ceiling means that state regime hits it less directly (no adult content surfaces regardless of age checks), but its pending underage-content protection litigation is a different exposure OurDream's three-company setup doesn't carry.
Which platform should you pick?
There's no single winning number here, partly because we don't score Character.AI and partly because the two genuinely serve different things. I'd take OurDream if what you mostly want is adult roleplay, memory that holds across weeks, group chat at 3-4 characters, a paid persona you build deep and keep, image generation, corporate paperwork you can verify, or a bounded subscription that actually unlocks the whole app. I'd take Character.AI if what you mostly want is genuine SFW use, a free tier you can run forever without daily caps, the biggest browse-and-discover character library going, or just sheer community size and a name people recognize. The table below routes that across 11 reader profiles. Character.AI legitimately wins four of them, and we don't hide it.
| Reader priority | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adult roleplay (the main reason people come here) | OurDream | Character.AI blocks adult roleplay with a hard ceiling tightened across 2024-2025; OurDream allows the full SFW-to-adult range on Premium |
| Free-tier indefinite use (no daily caps) | Character.AI | Genuine free tier with rate limits, not daily caps; OurDream's 50 msgs/day is the most generous daily-cap free tier we test but is still a daily cap |
| Memory continuity across weeks (long narrative roleplay) | OurDream | 2+ week memory horizon per multiple reviewers (9.0/10, the longest of the 9 apps we test); Character.AI's memory is session-scoped |
| Multi-character group chat (3-4 simultaneous characters) | OurDream | 4-character ceiling with persistent personas; Character.AI's Group Chat exists but cross-character coherence at scale rates lower per hands-on reviewer testing |
| Character library breadth (browse-and-discover) | Character.AI | Hundreds of thousands of user-built characters with a browse, trending, popular and by-category surface the rest of the companion field does not match |
| In-app image generation | OurDream | Image gen at 10 coins/image, partly uncensored on the free tier and fully unlocked on Premium; Character.AI ships nothing comparable in-app |
| A paid persona you build deep and keep | OurDream | 40+ personalities × 100+ occupations × 60-80+ kink tags × 19 voices × 20+ relationship dynamics + 7M-character marketplace; Character.AI's personas are built by other users first |
| Privacy-conscious or discreet billing | OurDream | Registry-verifiable across three companies (Delaware + New Mexico + Cyprus HE 473775); "Dream Studio" bank line (nothing flagging adult content); 14-day EU/UK refund overlay |
| Bounded $9.99/month subscription unlocking full product | OurDream | Yearly $9.99 effective + AIMOJO -$10 first purchase; subscription unlocks adult content + image gen + video gen + group chat + voice. c.ai+ at $9.99/mo does not unlock adult roleplay |
| Community size and brand recognition | Character.AI | Around 28M monthly users at peak per third-party estimates; the r/CharacterAI subreddit, in-app feed and broader cultural footprint dwarf any dedicated companion app |
| Genuinely SFW use case (study buddy / writing partner / fictional dialogue) | Character.AI | Moderated by design; OurDream's adult framing (kinky personality presets, kink-tagged character creator) gets in the way when SFW is what you actually want |
Tallied up: OurDream wins seven rows, Character.AI wins four. The four Character.AI wins are the ones where its strengths are real and nobody touches them. If your top priority is free use forever, library breadth, community scale, or a genuinely SFW session, stay with Character.AI and don't second-guess it. If your priority sits in any of the other seven rows, and especially the first one (the reason most people are here), go with OurDream.
If you're weighing AI companions against real people instead, our AI versus real cam breakdown covers that trade-off. And if you want the wider list of where Character.AI users go when they leave, our Character.AI alternatives roundup ranks OurDream next to Candy.ai, Lovescape, Joi and other adult-allowed apps under the same 8 categories.

How did we test both?
OurDream is scored on our 8-category system: Pricing & Value (18%), Conversation Quality (16%), Privacy & Compliance (14%), Customization (12%), Image Generation (12%), UX & Mobile (10%), Voice (10%), Video Generation (8%). The per-category scores come straight from the full OurDream writeup (8.2/10 overall) and we don't re-score them on a comparison page.
Character.AI gets a plain brand profile from public sources, no score and none of our criteria applied. Those sources: Wikipedia, federal court filings (the Garcia v. Character Technologies docket on CourtListener), Bloomberg and The Verge on the August 2024 Google deal, The New York Times on the underage-content protection lawsuit, the public Terms of Service, third-party user estimates, and r/CharacterAI threads. So one side has an 8.2/10 and the other has a profile with no number, and that's us being honest about what we can keep retesting, not a gap in the work.
How I actually checked. I walked the OurDream pricing page on 2026-05-20. I read Character.AI's public Terms of Service and The Verge's coverage of the Sensitive Content Filter rollout. I read the Garcia v. Character Technologies federal docket on CourtListener. I pulled together user reports from r/CharacterAI on the moderation tightening. I didn't subscribe to either one long-term myself. Editorial spend on this page is exactly $0. Affiliate revenue pays for everything we do, and it's disclosed at the top of this page per FTC 16 CFR Part 255.

How often we recheck each category: Pricing & Value every 3 months, Image Generation every 6 months, Privacy & Compliance every 6 months and within 7 days of any regulatory news (UK Online Safety Act, US state age-verification laws, EU DSA). For the Character.AI profile, once a year, unless a real legal or product event lands (the lawsuit moving, a moderation change, an ownership shift), in which case we recheck within 14 days.
Frequently asked questions
Is OurDream better than Character.AI?
Depends on what you want. OurDream scores 8.2/10 across our 8 scoring categories and gives you adult roleplay, a 2+ week memory horizon, group chat up to 4 characters at once, image generation, and verifiable corporate paperwork (Delaware + New Mexico + Cyprus registry HE 473775) for $9.99/month yearly. Character.AI gives you hundreds of thousands of user-built characters, a genuine free tier, and the biggest community in the space, but it blocks explicit roleplay after the underage-content protection lawsuit filed October 2024 and the December 2024 Sensitive Content Filter. Pick OurDream if adult content, memory, group chat or verifiable compliance carries the experience for you. Pick Character.AI if a free tier, library breadth or community size matters more.
Why is Character.AI so restrictive on explicit content?
Character.AI tightened moderation across 2024-2025 in response to the October 2024 Garcia v. Character Technologies wrongful-death lawsuit (filed by Megan Garcia in Florida federal court, case 6:24-cv-01903, involving a minor) plus additional underage-content protection lawsuits filed October 2025. December 2024 introduced a Sensitive Content Filter with a hard ceiling: explicit roleplay is always blocked regardless of toggle state or age attestation. Mid-conversation refusals on borderline content became routine. The moderation posture is a litigation response, not a feature toggle a user or paying subscriber can disable.
Is OurDream an adult-allowed Character.AI?
Not exactly. OurDream is a paid-default AI companion built around lasting personas, 40+ personality presets, 100+ occupation tags, 60-80+ kink tags, 19 voice options, and a 7M-character user-built marketplace. The free tier gives you 50 messages and 5 images a day. Character.AI is a free-tier-first character library with hundreds of thousands of community-built characters, and even though OurDream's 7M count is bigger, Character.AI's browse-and-discover surface is the one it can't match. OurDream allows the adult roleplay Character.AI blocks, which is what pulls most people across, but the differences in pricing, discovery and the whole feel of each app are real on both sides.
Can I import Character.AI conversations to OurDream?
No. Neither one has a native import path, and Character.AI doesn't export your conversation data in any structured form. The workaround is rebuilding the persona by hand: recreate your favorite Character.AI character in OurDream's creator across 40+ personality presets, 100+ occupations, 60+ fetishes, 19 voice options and 20+ relationship dynamics, pulling the look, voice, personality and backstory from memory or screenshots. Figure 10-15 minutes per persona. You won't get the months of conversation history back, but OurDream's 2+ week memory will hold continuity going forward better than most apps in the field.
Is Character.AI free? Is OurDream free?
Character.AI runs a genuine free tier with rate limits; most people never pay, and the c.ai+ subscription at roughly $9.99/month buys a priority queue and faster replies without unlocking adult content. OurDream's free tier gives you 50 messages a day, 5 standard images a day and 55 DreamCoins on signup; real adult-content access needs the Premium subscription at $9.99/month effective on the yearly plan ($119.88/year, -50% versus the $19.99 monthly rate), and the AIMOJO partner code takes $10 off the first purchase. OurDream's free tier is the most generous of the 9 AI girlfriend apps we test and works as a real long-term browser, not just a trial.
Which is safer right now, Character.AI or OurDream?
Two different shapes of risk. Character.AI is under pending wrongful-death and underage-content protection litigation in US federal court (Garcia v. Character Technologies filed October 2024 plus more lawsuits filed October 2025); the December 2024 Sensitive Content Filter and the broader tightening are visible responses. Character Technologies Inc. is California-based. OurDream runs three companies: Dream Studio USA, Inc. (Delaware C-Corp), Dream Studio LLC (New Mexico), and Tektopia Ltd (Cyprus private limited, registry HE 473775, checkable on the public Cyprus registrar in under a minute). Both are for adults only, and we don't recommend either for anyone under 18. OurDream wins on corporate paperwork you can verify; Character.AI's content ceiling cuts its exposure to adult-content rules but leaves it with an underage-content protection legal risk OurDream's three-company setup doesn't carry.
