What we haven't tested directly: memory holding past a 14-day window on OurDream, the roughly 40 percent video-generation failure rate one source (companionguide) reports for OurDream's 60-second clips, what happens to auto-renewal after you cancel on either app, how much of a fight an actual refund claim turns into on either app, and the USC 2257 exemption claim on both sides (the AI-only-content argument hasn't been tested in US federal court yet [Source: Cornell LII: 18 USC 2257 record-keeping requirements · verified 2026-05-20]). We didn't keep a long-term subscription on either one; what we spent writing this page is exactly $0, the way our scoring page describes.

How they actually differ

These two apps chase adjacent itches with barely-overlapping strengths, but on the full scorecard the call isn't close. Joi is brilliant at one thing (near-4K AI video) and shaky at most others. OurDream is broad and deep almost everywhere, with one real soft spot (voice). Five things decide it.

Pricing and the yearly entry. Joi's yearly lands at $4.00/month effective ($47.99/year) at the standard rate. Promo code HELLO50 drops the Joi yearly to $2.00/month effective ($24/year) for new subscribers, the cheapest paid floor across the 9 AI girlfriend apps we tested. OurDream Premium Yearly lands at $9.99/month effective ($119.88/year, -50% off the $19.99 monthly rate), and the AIMOJO partner code knocks $10 off the first purchase. On the sticker alone Joi wins by a 5x margin at HELLO50. The catch is the token economy, and it's a big one. Joi stacks Neurons on top of the subscription in a way that can multiply your real bill several times over: 2 Neurons per explicit-message view, 50 per image (forced batch of 2 = 100 minimum), about 100 per Dream Clip, 2,000 per 5-minute live video call (roughly $30 to $50 per hour of call time, and you get charged the full whack even if you hang up inside the window). OurDream's DreamCoin economy bundles 1,000 coins per month in Premium plus a +1,000 bonus on yearly signup, and the coins never expire while your subscription is live. We score Pricing & Value 8.5 (Joi) vs 9.0 (OurDream); the scoring weighs the sticker against how predictable the real bill is, and OurDream's bundled cost edges it by half a point.

Memory. This is where roleplay either survives the week or dies on Tuesday. OurDream's free tier and Premium tier both hold roughly 2+ weeks of conversation continuity (multiple reviewers land on the same range), with one citing 100-message retention against Candy.ai's roughly 25. Joi ships a three-tier memory ladder named after planets (Moon 15.13 at 25 messages on the free tier, Mars 2.2 at 200 messages on Premium, Saturn 5.2 on premium chat). The Mars 2.2 200-message context really is deeper than the 5-7 day ceiling a lot of free tiers settle for. And then comes the catch. Joi clamps a hard 115-character per-message cap on everything, which nobody else we tested does. A 200-message window filled with 200 one-line turns throws that long window straight in the bin, and writing a proper multi-paragraph scene just isn't possible. We score Conversation Quality 9.0 (OurDream) vs 6.0 (Joi); a 3-point gap, the second-biggest on the card.

Voice and video, pulling opposite ways. Voice goes to OurDream by 4 points (5.5 vs 1.5). I ran the same flirty late-night line through both on speaker, expecting at least one to sound like a person I'd want whispering back. OurDream's 19 presets come out "robotic", "lacking emotional depth", and "sounding distinctly artificial" (four independent reviewers said the same), which lands it at the lowest of OurDream's own scores, and it still beats Joi, because Joi's voice gets rated "1.0 to 2.0 out of 5" by 5+ reviewers and gets called "missing or unusable" more than once. Video flips it: Joi takes that by 2 points (9.5 vs 7.5). Dream Clips ships near-4K AI video with V4 identity-lock so her (or his) face stays consistent frame to frame; five free clips a month come with Premium, extra ones run about 100 Neurons each. We score Joi Video 9.5/10, the single highest sub-score we've handed out across the 9 AI girlfriend apps. OurDream goes longer, clips up to 60 seconds at 100 to 300 DreamCoins each (a genuine edge on length), but one source pegs a roughly 40 percent failure rate where a failed clip eats your DreamCoins with no refund, and that's a number we haven't tested directly.

Customization and what the free tier actually lets you do. OurDream's character creator hands you 40+ personality presets, 100+ occupation tags, 60 to 80+ kink tags, 19 voice options, and 20+ relationship dynamics, plus a 7M+ character marketplace built by users who earn DreamCoins when people interact with their creations. Joi leans on its celebrity-character library instead (digital lookalikes of public figures, locked behind 1,000 to 8,000 Neuron unlocks) on top of the usual persona-builder fields. We score Customization 9.0 (OurDream) vs 7.0 (Joi); a 2-point gap. The free tier widens that gap. OurDream gives you 50 messages a day plus 5 standard images a day for nothing; Joi gives you about 5 messages a day plus 6 image generations a month. If you want to poke around before paying, OurDream lets you do roughly 10x more chatting per day.

Who owns it, and where you can use it. OurDream runs on three entities built for working across borders: Dream Studio USA, Inc. (Delaware C-Corp at 1111B S Governors Ave STE 28684, Dover, DE 19904), Dream Studio LLC (New Mexico, Albuquerque), and Tektopia Ltd (Cyprus private limited, registry HE 473775 at Voukourestiou 25, Limassol). You can pull all three off the public Delaware and Cyprus registries in about a minute. AES at-rest encryption, TLS 1.3 in-transit, SOC 2 Type 2 claims, and a 14-day refund window with an EU/EEA/UK/Swiss consumer-rights overlay are all written down. Joi runs through Novi Limited (Cyprus, registry HE 407352), named as the data controller in Joi's own Terms [Source: Joi.ai Terms of Service: Novi Limited Cyprus as data controller · verified 2026-05-20]. The Privacy Policy covers GDPR, CCPA plus 12 US state privacy laws, and Japan APPI [Source: Joi.ai Privacy Policy: GDPR + CCPA + Japan APPI scope · verified 2026-05-20], but it names no Data Protection Officer, designates no EU representative, and pins down no retention windows. There's no USC 2257 statement on Joi at all. Joi is geo-blocked in the United Kingdom at /uk/unavailable, dodging UK Online Safety Act compliance instead of doing it. We score Privacy & Compliance 8.5 (OurDream) vs 5.5 (Joi); a 3-point gap, the biggest on the card after Conversation Quality.

Side-by-side scorecard

So that's eight dimensions where OurDream wins five (Pricing, Conversation, Privacy, Customization, Voice), Joi wins one (Video), and two tie (Image Generation, UX & Mobile). Weighted up, the composite comes to 8.2 vs 6.7, a 1.5-point gap that's wider than most of the head-to-heads we've put out. The reason is where the weight sits. Video Generation carries the lowest weight, 8%, so Joi's 9.5/10 Video can only lift the composite so far. Conversation Quality carries 16% and Privacy & Compliance carries 14%, and that's exactly where OurDream's two 3-point gaps pile up. An app that's spectacular at one thing and weak elsewhere ends up below an app that's broad and deep with a single soft spot. Simple as that.

Pricing comparison

The winner flips depending on what you measure. Joi wins the sticker fight: $2/month effective with HELLO50 is the cheapest paid floor across every AI girlfriend app we cover. OurDream wins on what the real bill ends up being: $9.99/month effective covers most daily use inside the Premium DreamCoin grant (1,000 coins/month plus the +1,000 yearly signup bonus), and the coins never expire while you're subscribed. Buy the Joi yearly, then run three Dream Clips a month and a few live calls, and you're suddenly at $40 to $80/month real-world spend, way over OurDream's $9.99 yearly headline. Go heavy on video on OurDream Premium and keep topping up DreamCoins (image at 10 coins, voice call at 50/minute, video at 100 to 300 per clip) and you land closer to $70/month at the Premium-plus-bulk-pack rate. Both economies can balloon past the sticker, but Joi's climbs faster because the live-call rate is the steepest meter on either app.

Refunds are the second thing that actually matters here. OurDream honors the EU 14-day statutory withdrawal through its public refund policy, so EU and UK readers fall under standard consumer-rights protections. Joi's Terms of Service flatly say no refunds for partial subscription periods and no refunds on Neuron purchases, and Joi doesn't grant the 14-day EU/UK withdrawal window. The bank statement lands on OurDream's side too: "Dream Studio" reads discreet on a credit-card line, while "joi.com" just spells out the app name for anyone glancing at your statement.

Compliance and geo

Compliance is the third big gap on this page (3 points under our scoring, 8.5 vs 5.5). The two apps sit in different regulatory spots, and the fallout lands on you, the reader.

OurDream AI. Three entities is a lot for this corner of the internet. Dream Studio USA, Inc. is the Delaware C-Corp handling US contracting at 1111B S Governors Ave STE 28684, Dover, DE 19904. Dream Studio LLC is the New Mexico operating arm at 1209 Mountain Road Pl NE Ste N, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Tektopia Ltd is the EU/EEA leg, a Cyprus private limited company, registry number HE 473775, at Voukourestiou 25, Neptune House, 1st floor, Flat/Office 11, Zakaki, 3045 Limassol. Delaware law governs, venue is New Castle County. The merchant descriptor on your statement just reads "Dream Studio" (discreet, nothing adult about it). AES at-rest encryption, TLS 1.3 in-transit, and SOC 2 Type 2 claims sit in the privacy policy. The 14-day refund window with the EU/EEA/UK/Swiss consumer-rights overlay is the bog-standard EU implementation. Now the honest caveats: no DPO is named, no UK Representative is listed, retention windows stay vague ("time necessary for processing"), the privacy policy doesn't name a single third-party chat, image, voice, or video processor, and the USC 2257 AI-only-content exemption is claimed but untested in US courts (we haven't tested that legal theory either, nobody has). Compliance earns 8.5/10.

Joi.ai. Novi Limited (Cyprus, registry HE 407352) is the data controller per Joi's own Terms of Service, even though some third-party reviews pin the platform on Lanoto Solutions Inc or Naylalabs. Cyprus law governs disputes, with LCIA arbitration for non-US users, AAA arbitration in New York for US residents, and a small-claims option below $5,000. The Privacy Policy covers GDPR, CCPA plus 12 US state privacy laws, and Japan APPI. But: no Data Protection Officer named, no EU representative designated, no retention durations published, no USC 2257 statement, no EU/UK 14-day withdrawal grant. The descriptor reads joi.com (not discreet). And there's a footnote on the corporate identity itself: Joi is the April 2025 rebrand of EVA AI per PRWeb release 302420812, and the dead UK shell JOI-AI LIMITED (Companies House #13414098) was dissolved August 13, 2024, which points to an early UK operating phase before everything moved to the Cyprus Novi Limited entity. Compliance earns 5.5/10. It clears our minimum bar to publish, but it sits well below where OurDream lands.

If you're in the UK. Joi simply isn't available. The /uk/unavailable page is blunt about it, Cloudflare-enforced right at the edge. Joi is dodging UK Online Safety Act compliance, not doing it. That leaves OurDream as your only option of the two for UK traffic, and it ships the statutory 14-day withdrawal under the EU/EEA/UK/Swiss consumer-rights overlay.

If you're in a US age-verification state. Texas (HB 1181), Utah, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Montana, Arkansas, Virginia, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, Idaho, and Oklahoma all gate adult content behind government-ID checks now. OurDream's three-entity footprint is set up to handle these state by state; Joi's thinner setup may just fall back to geo-blocking case by case as new statutes land.

Honesty flags on both platforms

Every head-to-head we run lays out the weak spots on both sides. The flags below are pulled straight from each app's own Review, word for word, sources and all, so neither side gets a softer edit than the other.

• Voice quality 1.5/10, the worst single dimension we've scored across the 9 AI girlfriend apps. Five-plus reviewers rate Joi's voice "1.0 to 2.0 out of 5" and keep calling it "missing or unusable" [Source: Our internal Joi research dossier: voice quality reviewer aggregation across 5+ sources · verified 2026-05-20]. Voice messages and the live-call audio both fall flat. If you care about voice at all, Joi is basically out of the running.
• 115-character per-message cap, which nobody else we tested imposes. That hard cap chops your roleplay turns off at the knees and fights the otherwise-deep Mars 2.2 200-message memory window. Fill a long context with 200 one-line turns and the long window is wasted; a proper multi-paragraph scene just can't happen on Joi.
• UK geo-block at /uk/unavailable, Cloudflare-enforced at the edge. Joi is dodging UK Online Safety Act compliance rather than doing it. UK readers can't use Joi without a VPN, and we don't recommend that workaround.
• EVA AI rebrand history plus a Naylalabs iOS publisher mismatch. Joi is the April 2025 rebrand of EVA AI per PRWeb release 302420812, so there's a pre-2025 footprint the "Joi" name quietly buries. The iOS app is published by Naylalabs Yazilim Ticaret Limited Sirketi (Turkey), not Novi Limited directly, which means a subscription you start inside the iOS app routes billing through Apple to the Naylalabs entity, outside the Cyprus jurisdiction the Terms of Service talk about. Use joi.ai in the browser.

OurDream AI honesty flags.

• Voice 5.5/10, the lowest of OurDream's own scores. Across four independent reviewers, the 19 presets get called "robotic", "lacking emotional depth", and "sounding distinctly artificial". OurDream still beats Joi here (Joi sits at 1.5/10), but that's a win on relative grounds, not absolute ones. If voice nuance is your dealbreaker, look elsewhere.
• A roughly 40 percent video failure rate we haven't tested directly. One source (companionguide) reports that failed clips eat your DreamCoins with no refund. That 40 percent is single-source, so we treat it as unconfirmed until someone reproduces it: one reviewer's bad run isn't a population-level failure rate, and the pipeline may well have been tuned since that was written.
• iOS / Android publisher mismatch. The iOS App Store listing for "Our dream: AI Companion" (App Store ID 6755042859) and the Google Play listing for com.deepdesire.aigirlfriendchat both publish under the developer name "Albert Paravyan", a personal account rather than the three corporate entities [Source: Google Play: OurDream AI Companion developer metadata (Albert Paravyan) · verified 2026-05-20]. GDPR Article 13 expects the controller's identity to be unambiguous to you. We'd use OurDream on the web rather than the native apps.
• USC 2257 exemption claimed on an AI-only-content basis, untested in US federal courts. OurDream's privacy policy frames the app as "purely AI-generated content where no real individuals are portrayed or engaged in any content creation", arguing the federal record-keeping requirement under 18 USC 2257 (which covers "actual sexually explicit conduct" by real performers) doesn't apply. The theory is plausible, it's the same one every AI-only platform leans on, and as of right now no US federal court has ruled on it. We haven't tested that argument and we don't lean on "fully USC 2257-compliant" framing.

The symmetry holds: 4 Joi flags, 4 OurDream flags, dead even. Neither app gets its weak spots buried under marketing copy on this page.

Verdict by use case

OurDream takes 8 of 10 use-case rows, Joi takes 2. Both win categories that genuinely matter. Joi's two wins sit on things nothing else does: near-4K Dream Clips is a feature OurDream can't match on length and quality at the same time, and the HELLO50 sticker undercuts every other app we cover. If one of those two is your whole reason for being here, pick Joi and don't look back. The other 8 rows go to OurDream because it wins the stuff most people actually touch every day, namely memory that lasts, group chat, customization, a generous free tier, room for proper roleplay, UK availability, a bill you can predict, and paperwork you can verify.
